Tesco is in for a very tough time when it reports third-quarter figures this week. The supermarket giant is tipped to reveal its worst sales performance since the early 1990s recession, with like-for-like sales growth in its core UK business from 4% this time last year, to between 1.1% and 2%.

Spanish F&V prices can vary by up to 35% from city to city

According to a report by the Spanish Retail Business Price Observatory, published recently by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, fruit and vegetable prices can vary by up to 35% depending on the town or city where they are sold, while F&V can cost up to 61% more depending on the retailer or the point of sale.

Rewe extend in Russia

The German supermarket chain Rewe has increased it’s presence in Russia by the acquisition of 13 Njam Njam supermarkets making it’s Russian estate up to 59 stores. The company is using it’s Austrian subsidiary Eurobilla, which currently controls its Central and Eastern European businesses to oversee the take over.

Spain: Cauliflower crops on the increase in Murcia

Cauliflower crops in the region of Murcia, mainly focused on the Campo de Cartagena area, have shown a strong increase in the last 10 years. In 1998, cauliflowers were grown on an area of 373 ha; nowadays they occupy more than 1,200 ha.

Poland: Headed Cabbage and Cauliflower production expected to fall in 2008

Estimations for this year’s headed cabbage and cauliflower production in Poland made by the Polish central statistical office (GUS) last September and released by Fruit and Vegetable Markets fall below those made in July. Last July, GUS estimated that headed cabbage production would total 1.3m tonnes in 2008, but in September the figure forecast was 1.2m tonnes. Estimated cauliflower production also slipped, from 222,000 to 215,000 tonnes.

EU leadership urgently needed to fight fake pesticides say majority of European enforcement authorities

Representatives of 17 European countries called on the European Union to take urgent measures to fight the rapid increase of fake and illegal pesticides. At an international conference in Warsaw, 150 participants from European enforcement and control authorities agreed that the problem was increasing in many states, and that coordinated action was needed.

Spain: 246,932 tonnes of cabbage exported in Jan-Sep 2008

Cabbages returned the fourth-highest export figures of all Spanish vegetables in the period from January to September 2008. These figures showed an increase of 2.5% on the same period in 2007 and only tomatoes, lettuce and peppers were exported in greater quantities. According to the Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters (FEPEX), a total volume of 246,932 tonnes of cabbage was exported in the first nine months of 2008.

Russians consumed 106 kg of vegetables per capita in 2007

The Russians consumed 106 kg of vegetables per person in 2007, the same quantity as in 2006, according to official information published by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) in its bimonthly report.

WUWM Markets serve 20% of world consumers

METRO Group raises sales by 7.1% during the first nine months of the year

METRO Group continued its solid growth course during the first nine months of the year 2008. In an increasingly challenging market environment the company was able to increase consolidated year-on-year sales by 7.1% to € 47.8 billion. The international share of sales grew to 61.2%. Third-quarter sales rose by 6.7% to € 16.3 billion.

Spain: New quality label for Andalusian products
