Spain: Cauliflower crops on the increase in Murcia

Cauliflower crops in the region of Murcia, mainly focused on the Campo de Cartagena area, have shown a strong increase in the last 10 years. In 1998, cauliflowers were grown on an area of 373 ha; nowadays they occupy more than 1,200 ha.

Florette includes broccoli in its microwave product range

The French brand Florette has recently launched a new product: broccoli, ready to cook in the microwave. Together with another new variety, green beans with turnip and carrot, this product forms part of Florette’s extended microwave product range, which first appeared in March and has proved a great success for the company.

Poland: Headed Cabbage and Cauliflower production expected to fall in 2008

Estimations for this year’s headed cabbage and cauliflower production in Poland made by the Polish central statistical office (GUS) last September and released by Fruit and Vegetable Markets fall below those made in July. Last July, GUS estimated that headed cabbage production would total 1.3m tonnes in 2008, but in September the figure forecast was 1.2m tonnes. Estimated cauliflower production also slipped, from 222,000 to 215,000 tonnes.

Carrefour Group to trial a new convenience store banner

The Carrefour Group is launching trials of a new store banner, Carrefour Contact, to build on the strength of the Carrefour brand.Located at the entry to or in the centre of small towns and villages, Carrefour Contact is a convenience store format offering a selection of everyday essential food items, with a broader range of fresh produce and a butcher's counter. The store also allows customers to shop for pleasure or for last-minute essentials.

“Spain shows great potential for increasing its broccoli consumption”

Although the consumption of broccoli in Spain is relatively low compared with average levels in Europe, the broccoli market offers great opportunities for Spanish growers. This is clear to see from the last campaign: broccoli exports from Murcia increased by 6%, compared with 2007, reaching a total of 64,000 tonnes. Juan Marín Bravo talked to Brassicas Today about the 2007-2008 broccoli campaign and his expectations for this market in the future.
