Mexican broccoli production reaches 324,074 tonnes in 2009

Both acreage and production levels are the highest since 1999

Mexican broccoli production totalled 324,024 tonnes in 2009, an increase of 4.8% compared with 2008, when 309,284 tonnes were harvested, according to SIAP (the Mexican Agri-food and Fisheries Information Service).

Despite this increase, broccoli production in Mexico has experienced many fluctuations over the last 10 years.
In 1999, production totalled 263,092 tonnes but this figure slipped to 214,922 in 2002, the lowest tonnage recorded in the period analysed. Since then tonnage figures have shown ups and downs.

Broccoli acreage also increased in 2009, to a total of 24,487 hectares, 8.2% more than in 2008 and 25.8% more than in 2006 (19,467 hectares).

As in the case of production, acreage figures have shown many fluctuations since 1999. The lowest acreage during the 10-year period was in 2002 when 16,262 hectares were assigned to this crop.

However, both the production and acreage figures in 2009 were the highest recorded in this period.

On the other hand, yield per hectare has remained stable throughout the period from 1999 to 2009, with very few fluctuations. In 2009, 13.7 tonnes per hectare were harvested, 1.4% less than the 13.9 tonnes per hectare recorded in 2008.
