Spain: Brassica consumption up 8% in the first quarter of 2010

Household vegetable consumption increases by 5.5%.

Brassica consumption in Spanish households reached 30,819 tonnes in the first three months of 2010, an increase of 8% in comparison with the same period in 2009, when 28,530 tonnes were consumed, according to the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM).

January was the month in which the highest consumption was recorded over this 3-month period: 12,422 tonnes.

The value of the brassicas consumed also increased, from 30,896 million euros in the first quarter of 2009 to 32,564 million euros in the same period of 2010.

Total vegetable consumption also showed an upward trend in the first quarter of 2010, reaching 684,047 tonnes, an increase of 5.5% compared with the same period last year.
