
In 2000, a total of 308,710 tonnes of cabbage were harvested in Spain, but in 2007 production had decreased 22% to 239,973 tonnes, according to data from “Frutas y Hortalizas en España” (Fruit and Vegetables in Spain), the latest report published by Fundación Cajamar.
As for cauliflower, 482,899 tonnes were produced in 2000. Over the course of the following 7 years, tonnage dropped 8% to 440,254 tonnes.

Total vegetable production
As for vegetables, in 2005 production accounted for 15.5% of total F&V production, but by 2007 this proportion had fallen 2.3% to 13.2%.
Despite the fact that vegetable acreage decreased between 2000 and 2007, production grew by 5.5% during this period.
With respect to yield by type of production, open field production yielded double the tonnage registered for protected cultivation.
Fruit production
In the period from 2000 to 2008, fruit production showed slight variations. In 2000, total fruit production reached 17,120,362 tonnes. 8 years later, production had decreased by just 0.8% to 16,976,900 tonnes.
During this 8-year period, the highest point was registered in 2003, with a total of 19,033,013 tonnes harvested. 2001 marked the lowest ebb in production, with 16,121,946 tonnes.
